Former New England Patriots’ quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will seemingly remain in San Francisco for the 2022 season after the team failed to trade him.  It was announced a few days ago that the former Patriot signal caller would remain in San Francisco as the primary backup to second year player Trey Lance.

Garoppolo will now become the highest paid backup quarterback in the NFL making $6.5 million in a guaranteed salary, with the potential to earn up to $10 million if he starts.  Jimmy Garoppolo’s tenure in San Francisco has been an up and down one.  He’s suffered some injuries and has failed to say on the field consistently, but has led the team to the NFC Championship game in two of the last three seasons.

The team also made the Super Bowl in 2019, falling to the Kansas City Chiefs.  Garoppolo seemed to originally be the heir apparent to Tom Brady when he was drafted, but Brady’s play continued to reach new heights in New England before Garoppolo was shipped to San Francisco.

With the solid success that he’s had as a 49er, it does make me wonder if he’d have had more success if he was never traded from the Patriots.  Kyle Shanahan is a great head coach, but he’s nothing compared to what Bill Belichick has built in New England, and Garoppolo likely would have been a perfect fit for the Patriots.

Jimmy Garoppolo will now be a free agent after the 2022 season, and he should have some suitors.  The Patriots would theoretically have plenty cap space to sign him, but I don’t anticipate the team dumping Mac Jones like that, unless Jones ends up being a total mess for New England in 2022.

What would be an even more interesting situation is if Tom Brady retired at the end of the 2022 season, to which the Buccaneers could try and sign Garoppolo.
