The New England Patriots’ 2022 season will be a defining one for the franchise. Here are three long-term goals that the team should strive for.

The New England Patriots are about to enter an extremely crucial time for their franchise.

While 2021 was a promising season, the team appeared to have taken a few steps back this offseason, which puts more pressure on the team to perform in 2022.

With Bill Belichick likely at the very tail end of his career, and a young quarterback in the building, there is a ton of unknown about the direction of the franchise after this season.

If the Patriot Way can continue to survive years down the road, there are a few things that the team should look to accomplish, and they should start this process in 2022.

Develop Mac Jones or find a different franchise quarterback

The first goal that the team needs to look to accomplish is with their quarterback position.

The Patriots need to either

  • Develop Mac Jones into a legitimate, franchise player
    • OR
  • Find another franchise quarterback, and find them fast

Finding a franchise quarterback is the hardest thing to do in sports, but the AFC East could end up being a massive quarterback division soon.

If both Tua Tagovailoa and Zach Wilson end up being legit, that puts even more pressure on Mac Jones, or the franchise as a whole.

Josh Allen will be Josh Allen for years to come, so the New England Patriots need to use the 2022 season to see if they can develop Mac Jones even further.

If not, the team needs to look to acquire in some way, an appreciable upgrade over Jones.

With the AFC East being filled with young quarterbacks, the team cannot waste time doing this, or else it’ll likely set them back for years.  They’ve got a good core of other players on the roster, and now’s the time to settle the “official” quarterback of the post-Brady era.
