While most across the NFL aren’t betting too hard on the Patriots for 2022, there are still some rather ambitious goals that the team can shoot for.

The story of the 2022 New England Patriots has not been written yet.  While their offseason hasn’t been that great, games that actually count for something haven’t started either.

The Patriots are currently anchored by the best coach in NFL history, and a promising quarterback entering his second season.

There are a plethora of examples of this type of dynamic on an NFL team.  The Patriots have been good for what seems like forever, and if there 10-7 season last year with a rookie quarterback was any indication, 2022 and beyond could actually lead to some very good football in the regular and post season.

Even though their backs are against the wall, there are still some lofty goals that they should strive to accomplish in the 2022 season.

3 lofty goals for the New England Patriots in 2022: Field a top 5 scoring offense with Mac Jones tossing 30 touchdown passes

Tossing 30 touchdown passes in an NFL season is really nothing anymore.  Quarterbacks do it constantly.  Jared Goff, Kirk Cousins, Derek Carr, and other average quarterbacks do it with ease.

Second year players like Joe Burrow in 2021 and Patrick Mahomes in 2018 have also lit it up.

We can’t forget about Justin Herbert last year, either.  However, with the current offensive set-up for the Patriots, and with the offense not performing that well so far in camp, I do think it would be a very lofty goal to try and field a top five scoring offense.

Last year, with a rookie quarterback, the team had the 6th rated scoring offense.  With the offensive personnel mainly staying the same, I do think landing in the top 10 is attainable, but with the amount of firepower just in the AFC, and some uncertainty remaining with who will be calling plays in 2022, I think accomplishing this goal is just that–lofty.

This would have to be quite the performance from the players and playcallers.  Mac Jones would have to take that year two leap with a tough schedule, and the playcaller, whether it be Belichick or Matt Patricia, would have to constantly scheme the players in positions to win.

I think Mac Jones tossing 30 touchdowns in a season is likely at some point, but doing it in 2022 and fielding a top five defense would just be insane.
