Potential emergence of DeVante Parker is great news for Patriots

As day one of training camp comes to a close for the Patriots, new receiver acquisition DeVante Parker is off to a very promising start.

One of the more notable moves for the Patriots this offseason was their acquisition of DeVante Parker, formerly of the Miami Dolphins.

The former first round pick struggled to stay consistent in Miami, but did have a 1,200 yard breakout season in 2019 where he caught nine touchdown passes.

Over a 17 game season, Parker averages 62 catches for 864 yards and four touchdowns.

While those aren’t WR1 numbers like many in the fanbase hope for, I think Parker can beat all of those numbers in 2022.

The first official day of Patriots training camp was rather kind to Parker.  He was seen consistently beating defensive backs, catching a handful of touchdowns, and already displaying chemistry with quarterback Mac Jones.

Nelson Agholor also apparently had a strong day as well.

See, the thing that I do quite like about the Patriots’ current receiver core is the overall depth.

Sure, while Parker may have a good 2022 season, he may not emerge as a clear WR1, but the depth between him, Agholor, Jakobi Meyers, and Kendrick Bourne would bode well for them as the season progresses.

However, there is no need to get overly excited about one day of training camp.

On the flip side, though, Parker immediately showing the Patriots that he is the most talented receiver on the roster is what he should do, right?  He’s entering his 8th season and has caught 338 passes.  He is, by far, one of the most experienced players on the roster, so that experience should be evident throughout camp and the rest of the offseason.

Perhaps DeVante Parker does need a change of scenery to return to his 2019 form.  We know he’s got loads of talent, but perhaps if he could separate himself as the clear WR1, the chemistry with Mac Jones will continue.
