The New England Patriots might need to pull off a crazy trade or two if they want to be competitive in the now loaded AFC East.

The Patriots have never really been known as a team who makes headlines with roster moves.  Last offseason, they were hyper active in free agency, signing a plethora of players on both sides of the ball to help their now second year quarterback, Mac Jones.

Heading into year two, Jones doesn’t have the ideal situation.  While the offensive line, running backs, and tight ends seem to be fine, his wide receivers aren’t ideal.

The defense could perhaps also benefit in acquiring a quality cornerback, as the team obviously did not elect to re-sign JC Jackson, who signed with the Los Angeles Chargers.

The team does not have a ton of cap space to work with, but there are some rather crazy trades they might need to pull off if they want to give themselves a better chance for 2022 and beyond.

Three crazy trades to help New England Patriots: Call Baltimore for Marcus Peters

Marcus Peters tore his ACL last year and missed the entire 2021 season, but looks like he should be ready for the season opener.  Peters has been one of the most consistent cornerbacks in the NFL since entering the league in 2015.

Peters is 29 years old and has one year left on his contract that carries a $15.5 million cap hit.

The Patriots need help badly at cornerback, and Peters and recently departed JC Jackson share a big similarity–they’re both ball hawks.  The Patriots’ current secondary is still talented, but they are missing a reliable turnover generator.

While the Ravens might never consider trading Peters, they did sign Kyle Fuller this offseason and drafted two cornerbacks in the 2022 NFL Draft.

For the right price, maybe for a 2023 third round pick, the Ravens then could be willing to send Peters to the northeast.

This would give the defense a much needed boost and would help them counter the offensive skill players in the AFC East.
