Odell Beckham Jr.’s Deebo Samuel-Patriots tweet was an awful prank

The New England Patriots are in Year 2 of a new era, looking to take discernible strides forward after Mac Jones led a relatively unimpressive receiving corps to the AFC Playoffs in 2021. Expectations among the fan base remain high, but nationally, the pressure is certainly off the Pats. These aren’t your grandfather’s Patriots (as long as your grandfather became a fan in 2001).
But don’t tell that to the rumor mill! According to those NFL experts, the Pats are still in the running/leading the pack for every big-name free agent and trade candidate, despite using up the majority of their cap last year.
One of the most prominent trade chases to involve the Patriots (tangentially) over the past year was the Odell Beckham Jr. Watch, which eventually ended up with OBJ … elsewhere, ready and willing to win a Super Bowl in Los Angeles.
Was Bill Belichick really agitating for an Odell deal? We’ll never know! But the people who garner clicks and RTs off including the most prominent NFL franchises in every conversation still considered the Patriots part of the club, despite being in the middle of an obvious retool.
Unfortunately, Beckham himself is now in the clicks business, based off his breaking piece of Deebo Samuel trade news — which was news to Deebo himself.
As the NFL Draft wrapped up, OBJ tweeted that the superstar Niners receiver was ON HIS WAY TO NEW ENGLAND! At the moment, he is not, unless he’s transferring at Logan to get to his ultimate destination.

Spoiler Alert: Not yet, fella!
Many analysts expected Samuel to be traded before the first round of the draft had ended after the wideout reportedly demanded a trade/new contract elsewhere. Joining him in agitation were fellow wide receivers Terry McLaurin and AJ Brown, but in a shocking twist, only Brown was dealt (to Philadelphia in exchange for a package led by the 18th pick).
A mid-draft Samuel trade would’ve been a bombshell, but would follow the pattern. After the draft? What were the Patriots even surrendering, in this scenario? 2023 picks so the Niners could snag CJ Stroud?
It took Samuel seven whole minutes to hit the snooze button here, but he fired off a message of annoyance in Beckham’s direction.

In the moment, the distraction from New England’s Cole Strange reach was welcome. When the dust settled, though, ClutchPoints hiring Beckham as their new Patriots insider rings hollow.
OBJ’s still looking for a new deal and a new home to rehab in, for what it’s worth. Quoth a writer frozen in 2016 and thawed out in the present day: PATRIOTS?!
