The NFL has officially changed its overtime rules. After a season filled with many complaints from fans throughout the country, it really comes as no surprise. After OT ruined arguably the most exciting game in NFL history, something had to be done.

So what impact will this have on the New England Patriots once the 2022 season kicks off?

As of Tuesday, March 29, the league approved to change the postseason overtime rules, ensuring that both teams have possession of the ball, even if one team scores a touchdown first. According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the change was favored by a 29-3 vote.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, in announcing the new provisions, said, “We always listen to the fans – that’s an important thing… We’re always looking to improve…”

How do the NFL’s new overtime rules affect the New England Patriots?

Let’s flash back to the 2018 AFC Championship Game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

A high intensity playoff game with a Super Bowl appearance on the line went into overtime with a score of 31-31. After winning the coin toss, the Patriots charged down the field on that first drive to score the game-ending touchdown that won them a conference title. Unfortunately for the Chiefs, this was all accomplished before they could even touch the ball.

Now, think about this scenario with the new postseason rules. The Patriots score the opening touchdown, but the Chiefs now get to retaliate. With Patrick Mahomes under center and driving forces like Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill, the Chiefs’ offense would very well have a chance to even the score again.

This iconic playoff game may have ended differently … but the powerful Patriots’ defense, who allowed just three points against the Rams in the Super Bowl two weeks later, would’ve definitely made it extremely difficult for KC in that extremely high-pressure moment.

Fast forward to 2022.

With a few key players gone from the defense, the Patriots D-line needs to step their game up.  Players like Matthew Judon, Devin McCourty, and Jalen Mills will have to lead the unit to make game-winning stops. This applies to both preventing their opponent from scoring first or withholding them from responding to a potential Patriots’ score.

As far as the offense goes, this puts an urgency on scoring as early as possible, which may suggest a boost to the passing game is required before next season. Mac Jones undoubtedly needs a No. 1 receiver or vertical threat to take this offense to the next level.

Keep the new overtime rules in mind as the Patriots continue to make offseason personnel moves to get the roster where it needs to be.
