Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots are undergoing a major facelift on the offensive side of the ball. Josh McDaniels vacated his post as offensive coordinator to become the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders, and he managed to take some top Patriots assistants with him.

So far, the Patriots have not addressed the lack of a coordinator. Belichick’s apparent apprehension to hire from outside the organization has led to many of the more qualified candidates taking positions elsewhere. Mac Jones may not have the benefit of an offensive savant on his staff in 2022.

In addition to rehiring failed Giants coach Joe Judge as an offensive assistant with an emphasis on coaching the quarterbacks, Matt Patricia is being brought up as a potential offensive line coach despite the fact he hasn’t had any sort of influence on that side of the ball since 2004. Now, the latest rumors surrounding the play-calling on offense are truly bizarre.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler (subscription required), there is an “open belief” around the league that Belichick will call plays on the offensive side of the ball for the first time in his career. We know Belichick runs New England with an iron fist, but this is ridiculous.

Will Bill Belichick run the New England Patriots’ offense?

Belichick has proven himself as a quality defensive play-caller for decades. Even though de facto coordinators like Brian Flores and Jerod Mayo have received head coaching interviews and job offers, Belichick is the straw that stirs the drink. Offensively, however, he has no experience as the primary play-caller.

Even with the uncertain future of JC Jackson, New England’s defense is set up for success in 2022. Rather than devote all of his attention to trying to nail the coordinator hire, Belichick is constructing an offensive coaching staff based around himself and two failed head coaches that didn’t have any pull on offense.

Belichick has some quality assistants on his staff, with tight ends coach Nick Caley, in particular, building an impressive resume in this league. Why not just let him take the reins at this point, especially when you have a very talented young quarterback who needs nurturing?

If this goes through, Belichick will essentially be the team’s head coach, GM, offensive coordinator, and co-defensive coordinator. If this idea is being floated around by anyone around the Patriots, someone needs to shut it down as quickly as possible to get Jones someone that can better accentuate his talents.

Belichick is certainly capable, but he has too many responsibilities if this were to actually happen.
