Bill Belichick and Urban Meyer spotted together fuels Patriots speculation

The New England Patriots‘ coaching staff and front office have already underwent significant changes this offseason.

Between offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and director of player personnel Dave Ziegler teaming up with the Raiders and former special teams coordinator Joe Judge returning as an offensive assistant after he was fired by the Giants, Bill Belichick’s coaching staff will look a lot different in 2022.

There are also reports hinting that senior football advisor Matt Patricia could join the offensive staff, so more changes could be on the way.

How about some more rumors, Patriots fans?

Over the weekend, Belichick and Urban Meyer were spotted together at Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, Florida. With Meyer out of a job following his unceremonious firing from the Jaguars, you can imagine this photo spread like wildfire across social media.

We have no idea whatsoever whether Meyer intends on coaching again, let alone as recently as next season. This past campaign, the three-time collegiate champion looked like he had no interest in being with the Jaguars (and was likely also unfit for the job).

Between bringing Tim Tebow out of retirement to play tight end, getting fined $100,000 for breaching offseason practice rules, likening coaching in the NFL to playing Alabama every week, and a video showing him dancing with a woman who was not his wife after a loss while his team flew home from Cincinnati, Meyer all but blew his lone NFL coaching opportunity.

We haven’t even mentioned Meyer allegedly berating his coaching staff and kicking former kicker Josh Lambo during warmups.

While the idea of being an offensive assistant (dare we say coordinator) on Belichick’s staff could resonate with the 57-year-old, Belichick would be out of his mind to hire Meyer this soon after his Jaguars demise. At least give it a full calendar year to let the vitriol surrounding Meyer cool down.

Of course, this could be a matter of much ado about nothing.

Just because the two coaching legends attended Trump’s party doesn’t mean they’re planning on teaming up this offseason. The only reason we felt obligated to address the fan-driven rumors is because Belichick is in need of more offensive minds after McDaniels’ departure (and poaching), and Meyer, for all his flaws, would fill a hole on that front.

The truth is we don’t know what to believe.

However, if anything surfaces down the line about a potential Belichick-Meyer partnership, you’ll know where to look to connect the dots.
