A history of Bill Belichick’s track record without Tom Brady at quarterback
7. 1992 Cleveland Browns
Team record: 7-9
Isn’t it ironic that Belichick, whom many consider the best NFL head coach of all time, and Nick Saban, believed to be the best college coach of all time, were both manning the sidelines in Cleveland during a difficult time for the franchise?
Even with their high-level football noggins on the bench, Cleveland often struggled. Defense wasn’t their issue, at least not in 1992. Cleveland was as good as it gets that season on that side of the ball. They gave up just 17.2 points per game, good for 10th in the league. But while we give Belichick credit for shoring things up on that front, the other side of the ball was horrific.
The Browns ranked 20th in points per game, scoring only 17 a week. Ultimately, Belichick won two more games than he did the previous season, finishing at 7-9.
By all accounts, Belichick deserves some love here. He was forced to deal with a revolving door at quarterback, resulting in four different signal-callers getting playing time. It’s a miracle Belichick won almost half his games that season.
