What was the Carson Wentz-Matt Judon incident all about?
What a weird affair on Saturday night. An uncharacteristic game from the New England Patriots resulted in an embarrassing loss and now we’ll have a showdown with huge AFC East implications this week.
But the Patriots better get back on track, because their undisciplined brand of football against the Indianapolis Colts won’t fly down the stretch. Boneheaded penalties, lack of execution, fighting on the field and … hurling questionable insults at the opposition just aren’t the type of distractions needed at the moment.
Then again, the latter of which probably needs to be talked about a little more. Early on in the third quarter of the Patriots-Colts game, star edge rusher Matthew Judon and Indy quarterback Carson Wentz were seen getting in one another’s faces on the national broadcast.
At the time, we had no idea what this was even about, outside of the tensions that were gradually rising to the surface. But then Wentz commented on what Judon apparently said to him … and now we have no idea what’s going on.
What happened between Matt Judon and Carson Wentz during Colts-Patriots?
Here’s what Wentz told reporters after the game:
"“I don’t know if I have ever been that fired up on a football field before. I don’t need to go into the specifics obviously, but a man’s ability to reproduce is being in question and some other guys with curse words. Guy’s hands needs to be at their side – I will just say that. When that happens, you can get pretty riled up as I expect a lot of people would.”"
Uhh … what? Did Judon insult Wentz by calling him sterile? Did Judon hit Wentz below the belt while sacking him? Maybe it was Wentz telling Judon he was sterile in an effort to downplay the effectiveness of the COVID-19 vaccine (kidding!). We actually do think you need to go into the specifics, Carson!
"“I don’t know. Leave it out on the field. Carson’s a good guy. He got mad about something, who knows, and I guess that anger was directed towards me.”"
A vague re-telling of the story from Wentz and a Patriot-esque response to a question about what had happened? The only shot we’ll have at getting a definitive answer is if these teams meet again in the playoffs and are forced to revisit what had happened during their Week 15 tilt.
At least if that happens, it’ll be on the Patriots’ home turf. For now, though, we’ll just be wondering about how Wentz’s ability to reproduce was jeopardized or put into question by Judon. Good times.
