After a season in which his coaching acumen was starting to get called into question due to an offensive regression, New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is reminding everyone just how special he can be. McDaniels has Mac Jones looking like the most polished of the five first-round rookie quarterbacks.

While most coaches that help a rookie perform like that would see their phones blow up with head coaching offers, McDaniels might not have that happen to him. Considering his past failures in Denver and some recent disasters from the Bill Belichick coaching tree, some teams might be apprehensive.

Still, it seems there is one team that wants to try and capture lightning in a bottle by hiring McDaniels.

Albert Breer reported that McDaniels could be a name to watch in reference to the Chicago Bears job. With Matt Nagy likely on his way out at the end of the season, could the Bears try to steal one of the main forces behind Jones’ rapid development?

McDaniels might be tempted by the opportunity to have his hands on the controls once more, but that would be a shortsighted decision. The role he’s in now could not only allow him to continue making Jones one of the league’s best young quarterbacks, but it could set him up for the chance to replace Belichick.

Josh McDaniels should turn down the Bears and stay with the Patriots.

Bill Belichick isn’t getting any younger, and New England could decide to promote from within to replace him. Perhaps McDaniels is that guy, considering how long he has been Belichick’s right-hand man on the offensive end. The McDaniels-Jones combo could dominate the AFC East.

One of the biggest issues with McDaniels’ short-lived tenure as the head coach of the Broncos was the fact he never got the quarterback situation right. While Justin Fields has more potential than Tim Tebow and Kyle Orton put together, he’d have to ride the rookie roller coaster with Fields under center.

McDaniels has two choices. He could either go to a desperate fanbase that wants immediate results after their latest offensive coach crashed and burned and try to build up another struggling rookie, or he could stay in New England, keep tinkering with Jones, and potentially replace Belichick after he retires.

McDaniels bolting the Colts to remain in New England set a precedent, as he showed he is only willing to leave the Patriots for a perfect head coaching opportunity. Chicago will not be able to offer him that opportunity, but staying around as the de facto head coach in waiting might.
