New England Patriots fans were devastated to learn that Julian Edelman planned to retire following the 2020 season.

However, this wasn’t a case of Andrew Luck where a face of the franchise calls it a career and disappears off the face of the earth.

Though he’s not on the field or a part of the locker room, Edelman has been following the Patriots’ 2021 campaign every step of the way.

He’s a constant presence on Twitter during games and has provided excellent analysis of the team’s journey on Paramount Plus’ “Inside the NFL.”

For now, though, we have to throw Edelman’s Pats fandom to the side and provide a follow-up to his 2020 arrest.

Last week, Edelman appeared on Barstool Sports’ “Pardon My Take” podcast and told his side of the story, which just so happened to be … hilarious

Former Patriots receiver Julian Edelman recalled what happened during his 2020 arrest.

"“You know that was a citizen’s arrest? …It wasn’t even a real arrest,” Edelman said. “Some guy waved a cop down after I did a hood slide — like a ‘Starsky and Hutch’ hood slide. Everyone thinks I jumped on a car and was, like, wrecking it. Like, I walked by a car — I thought it was one of my buddies — and I did, like, a ‘Starsky and Hutch’ hood slide, like, swiping on it. Guy gets out of his car and waves down a cop. He’s like, ‘Hey! This guy!’”“And (beforehand) there’s a robbery right next door. We were locked up in this restaurant for like four hours. So, they caution-taped all this area off. And I sit there, and it’s me, Paul Pierce and (Amendola). And we were, you know, drinking the stuff, having a good-old time. And, as soon we get out, we were talking about ‘Starsky and Hutch,’ and I was like, ‘Hey guys!’ And I do, like, a ‘Starsky and Hutch’ hood slide. And later getting cuffed up.”"

Sounds like it was all just a big misunderstanding, though Edelman probably should’ve confirmed the car belonged to one of Paul Pierce or Danny Amendola before he jumped on it. We suppose that’s what happens when you have one too many adult beverages.

Recreating the hood slide from “Starsky and Hutch” is a great idea, in theory. However, you can imagine how it looked to an innocent bystander when he spotted a seemingly intoxicated individual hopping on the hood of a Mercedes in Beverly Hills. Our guess is it wasn’t Edelman’s finest moment.

Edelman was arrested and cited on misdemeanor vandalism, but he was never prosecuted. The owner of the Mercedes told the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office that the former Super Bowl MVP cooperated in full and compensated him for the repair costs.

The extent to which Edelman damaged the Mercedes is unknown, but it couldn’t have been too bad given he got off scot-free.

Edelman may look back on this as a humorous escapade, but you can bet he won’t be jumping on random luxury cars anytime soon. If he does, he might get a stern talking to from former head coach Bill Belichick.
