The New England Patriots should be in line to face a couple of old friends this week against the Carolina Panthers. Not only will the Patriots face Stephon Gilmore just weeks after trading him away, but they could take on a former division rival in quarterback Sam Darnold.

While Darnold started off hot, he has been putrid without Christian McCaffrey, and the concussion he suffered in a win against the Falcons last week could force backup PJ Walker into action.

With Mac Jones and the Patriots fresh off a very impressive victory against Justin Herbert and the Chargers, New England is likely not going to be scared by a Panthers team that is fresh off of a brutal four-game losing streak.

In fact, they could be eyeing this matchup as a way to boost their playoff chances.

Will New England end up taking home the victory in this game, or will Carolina use their front seven to overwhelm Jones and secure the win?

Patriots vs Panthers Odds Week 9

According to our friends at WynnBET, the Patriots are a 3.5-point road favorite. They have -110 odds to cover the spread (bet $110 to win $100). If you want to pick New England to win outright, they’re -190 on the moneyline (bet $190 to win $100).

Carolina is +170 on the moneyline. After the Pats’ defense was able to limit Herbert, they likely won’t back down from the challenge of stopping Darnold or this substandard passing attack.

The over/under for Sunday is set at 41.5 points, so Vegas clearly thinks that both quarterbacks will struggle to get any sort of momentum going in this game against defenses that have been playing extremely well over the last few weeks.

Patriots vs Panthers Prediction Week 9

The Patriots will likely be in for a defensive battle against Carolina, as they will either start a fourth-year quarterback with more interceptions than touchdown passes that has been famously bad against Belichick defenses or a backup that will be totally overwhelmed by the prospect of facing this defense.

While the Panthers have a solid front seven that should cause plenty of problems for this offensive line, the Patriots are fresh off taking it to a solid Chargers defense, so they shouldn’t necessarily go into this game completely petrified of Carolina.

Look for New England to cover the spread, as they should ride their defense and a mistake-free game from Jones to yet another win.

Patriots 21, Panthers 16
