The New England Patriots absolutely humiliated the rival New York Jets in their 54-13 domination of Robert Saleh’s team.

Mac Jones put together his best game in the NFL, and the likes of Nelson Agholor and Kendrick Bourne took advantage of a secondary that is both young and hampered by injuries.

Jones had his first 300-yard game as a pro while Bourne and Agholor accounted for touchdowns.

In fact, their touchdown came on a trick play, as Agholor was on the receiving end of a throw from Bourne that looked better than anything Zach Wilson and Mike White did all day.

The Jets were getting desperate and overly aggressive in this game, and Bill Belichick sensed an opportunity to pounce on Gang Green by calling this play in order to take advantage of their inexperience. Jones, though, knew this play was going to work without a doubt, and decided to celebrate far before it even unfolded.

When Bourne started to throw the ball at the 30-yard line, Jones already had his arms raised in celebration. Agholor already had his defender, who was falling to the ground beat by five yards, so this was a simple matter of hitting a wide-open receiver down the sideline.

Mac Jones and the Patriots came alive on offense.

Jones recorded 307 yards passing and two touchdowns without breaking a sweat in this game. Bourne totaled four catches for 68 yards in addition to his touchdown throw, and Agholor managed 51 yards despite only hauling in two passes.

The Patriots have tried this move before over the last few years, although Jakobi Meyers has usually been the receiver who throws the pass. The Bourne wrinkle was able to confuse the Jets, and it serves as a sign that Josh McDaniels trusts this offense enough to get very creative.

The only reason this play opened up in the first place was that Jones has been white-hot the last few games. in his previous four contests, two of which have been wins, Jones is completing 73% of his passes and has seven touchdown strikes. When you have a QB dialed in like this, the trick plays can be genuinely devastating.

It’s easy to write off last week’s performance as what happens when a team that has their act together takes on a rookie quarterback and rookie head coach, but the Patriots’ historic offensive showing was a reminder to the rest of the league that Jones is here and will be here for the next few years.

Jones’ premature celebration proves he’s already in a groove and knows what’s working in New England.
