How is there not a single other quarterback out there for New England Patriots fans and media members to compare Mac Jones to? It just has to be Tom Brady? For the rest of his career? Every single week?

Boston fans, at least those born in the last couple of generations, are beyond spoiled. They’ve witnessed six Super Bowl titles, four World Series victories, one NBA championship and one Stanley Cup. The run began in 2001. That’s 12 championships of some sort in 20 years. Life’s been good.

But maybe it’s time for a reality check?

The Patriots are no longer the Patriots. They’re scratching and clawing to victories over the Houston Texans. They’re doomed by late-game gaffes against the visiting Miami Dolphins and New Orleans Saints. Mac Jones is not Tom Brady. Nobody will ever be Tom Brady.

So, in a year that will be a crucial stepping stone for the future success of the Patriots, let’s focus on the task at hand instead of trying to draw every parallel between Brady and Jones because you think it will fit a fun narrative.

The parallels between Patriots QBs Tom Brady and Mac Jones need to stop.

Ok, let’s rewind through every team’s franchise history and see how many young QBs have led 10-point comebacks in the fourth quarter in the same week … and then see what it actually means.

You think this Patriots team is going to the Super Bowl? You think this Patriots team is making the playoffs? The delusion of walking into a guaranteed a winning/successful season each year must stop. The 2021 season is no longer a revenge tour to dispel 2020 — it’s now more of a building block than anything.

Jones out-performing the rest of the rookies in this class is encouraging, but what other rookie has a favorable standing with their current team? Trevor Lawrence got stuck with Jacksonville. Justin Fields is going to have his development hampered by the offensively-challenged Bears. Trey Lance just got his first start. Zach Wilson is on the Jets.

Jones by far has the best support system from a coach and personnel perspective. But again, he’s not Tom Brady. He will not be Tom Brady. The Tom Brady era is over. It will never happen again. Celebrate that it happened, move on, and hope the best for Jones.

There’s absolutely no need to be comparing worthless regular-season occurrences and act as if Jones is the second coming of the greatest quarterback in NFL history … who’s still going strong and will be adding to his resume in the next few years. How much farther ahead of ourselves could we possibly get?
