Patriots: Rob Gronkowski talking about failed trade to Lions is hilarious
By Jerry Trotta
Though the loss to Miami looks worse after the Dolphins were steamrolled by Buffalo on Sunday, the Patriots have looked fairly impressive over the first two games.
Has it been a perfect brand of football? Obviously not, but we’ve seen flashes of a team that could sneak into the playoffs in an AFC that might not be as deep as folks expected heading into the campaign.
All in all, Patriots fans have very little to complain about.
In fact, the only thing the fan base can be up in arms about is that Tom Brady is on pace to enjoy the most prolific season of his career. Even worse? Rob Gronkowski looks like prime Gronk after an up and down first year in Tampa Bay.
Gronkowski even appeared on the Monday Night Football broadcast alongside the Manning brothers during Packers-Lions.
After Gronk’s cameo, which surely had thousands of fans dying laughing, a video of him discussing his nixed trade to the Lions resurfaced on Twitter…and you know what? It was somehow funnier the second time!
Former Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski discussing his failed trade to the Lions is great comedy.
It simply will never get old.
Can you really blame Gronkowski for threatening to retire if he was traded to the Lions, who finished a lousy 3-12 in 2019? Though Gronkowski wound up retiring after that season anyway, why would a first-ballot Hall of Famer want to finish his career with a laughingstock franchise?
Even a character like Gronk would struggle to have fun in Detroit. Eh, maybe not, but you get the point.
Getting back to the trade, it seems pretty ruthless of the Patriots to ship the greatest TE in franchise history to a team that hasn’t one a playoff game since 1991. However, after looking at the details of the trade, you really can’t blame Bill Belichick for pulling the proverbial trigger.
Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Lions agreed to give up their first- and second-round picks (No. 20 and No. 51 overall) in the 2018 draft in return for Gronkowski and a Patriots second-rounder, the No. 43 overall selection.
That would’ve been a ridiculous return for a player with an extensive injury history who had previously speculated retirement.
Fast forward to the 2020 offseason, and the Patriots unloaded Gronkowski and a seventh-rounder to the Buccaneers in exchange for a fourth-round pick to reunite him with Brady.
There was no chance Gronk was going to veto that deal, and his decision to return to the NFL was justified after he added a fourth Super Bowl ring to his collection last season. The crazy part? He seems to be in a great position to pick up a fifth given how Brady and Tampa Bay have looked in the first two games.
Funny how things worked out, right?
