Mac Jones literally caught winking at former Patriots on Dolphins defense

We knew Mac Jones seemed in control during his first-ever start with the New England Patriots on Sunday against Miami, but we had no idea he was this cool a customer.

Jones dotted plenty of receivers en route to a 29-of-39, 281-yard day that looked like a prototypical five-year veteran’s season opener. He was poised, able to raise and deliver mid-range strikes all over the field. He evoked a young Tom Brady, if a young Tom Brady had actually won a National Championship and orchestrated the most explosive offense in college football one year prior.

What we didn’t notice the first time around, though, was that Jones had a bit of Brady’s savagery streak in him, too.

Humble, yes. Jogging back to the huddle like he’d scored a thousand touchdowns after his first TD, sure. But winking at some former Patriots on the defensive line mid-play? Ooh, boy. Didn’t see that one coming.

Jones saved the spice for Jason McCourty, who you may have noticed celebrating a little extra hard after securing the victory, as well as linebacker Elandon Roberts, a Brian Flores favorite who he sniped the season after he toasted the Phins with a touchdown in Week 17.

Think this rivalry meant a little more to the kid? Wink wink.

Patriots QB Mac Jones trolled some former Pats with a mid-game wink.

Of course, it must be noted that Jones had no overlap with either player. You have to think they were both chirping him relentlessly with New England specifics. “Which airport-quality hotel are you staying in? The Radisson?”

At first, we didn’t know what prompted this little bit of revenge, especially since the trio never shared a camp together. We had a fantasy, though, that maybe Bill Belichick told Jones to go for it on the sideline pre-play.

“Hey, Mac, come here. See those guys? Yeah, they used to play here. They totally short-circuit if you wink at ’em in the middle of the action. Anyway, have fun with it.”

Turns out, Jones was just sick of hearing them call out his play before he was able to execute. Familiarity with the system, we guess.

Currently, Flores owns the upper hand on his former ‘mates, even though the Patriots seem to think they can predict Tua Tagovailoa’s every move.

Perhaps the Pats defense should try the wink next time, too? Seems like we might’ve uncovered something here.
