Patriots: 3 best-kept secrets on New England’s deep roster
By Mike Luciano
2. CB Myles Bryant
Everything that could be said about Taylor on the offensive side of the ball can be applied to Bryant on defense. Despite several years of quality production at a Pac-12 school (Washington, in Bryant’s case), he was routinely passed over in the draft due to his 5-9, 185-pound frame as a cornerback.
But Bryant was able to give Patriots fans a small glimpse into what a tremendous slot cornerback he could be last year. He recorded 12 tackles in limited playing time in addition to one of the best Patriots defensive plays of the year when he ripped the ball away from Robert Woods and intercepted Jared Goff in primetime.
Myles Bryant is a solid backup cornerback.
Bryant might get thrust into action more this year, as the Stephon Gilmore situation has yet to reach any sort of definitive conclusion. Even if Gilmore stays, there are plenty of chances for Bryant to wiggle his way into a more regular role with New England.
Jalen Mills was brought in on a hefty new contract to fill several defensive backfield roles, but he was as inconsistent as the day is long in Philadelphia. Joejuan Williams has yet to look like a second-round draft choice. If Bryant gets on the field, he’ll make up for a lack of size with a great feel for the game and the ability to generate turnovers.
