1. QB: Cam Newton vs Mac Jones

Newton’s time in New England is already coming to a close, as the selection of Jones in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft helped signal that the former Alabama star will eventually be under center. Jones will likely be the backup to start his career, but how long will that last?

Newton’s passing numbers last year were questionable, but the fact he was playing with a bunch of XFL players at wide receiver likely impacted that. Newton’s 11 touchdowns on the ground last year showed that he can still find the end zone, which isn’t the best news for Jones if he wants to start right away.

When will the Patriots start Mac Jones over Cam Newton?

Jones needs a bit of time to develop. Going from Steve Sarkisian’s popgun college offense to a Josh McDaniels offense is like being asked to play Free Bird on your second day at guitar lessons. Jones’ ability will be on full display at OTAs, including how well he has absorbed the playbook.

Jones might start sooner rather than later, as Newton hasn’t done a ton to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt he can be the guy to lead New England back to the contending tier. If everything goes as planned, Jones should be able to take his spot in a relatively short amount of time.
