Who would have thought Bill Belichick’s Cleveland Browns days would come back to haunt him at this point?

He’s the head coach of the New England Patriots. He’s been to nine Super Bowls and has won six of them. He’s been embroiled in cheating scandals over the last 20-plus years, which haven’t even followed him as harshly as they probably should have.

But now we have a story from former Chicago Bears QB Jim McMahon, who actually defeated the Patriots in Super Bowl XX.

It’s all coming full circle!

According to McMahon, who was attempting to extend his career in the mid-1990s with the Browns after his tenure ended with the Bears in the late-80s, Belichick is a “lying piece of sh-t.”

Oh boy.

Appearing on “The Interviews” podcast, McMahon let loose, claiming that Belichick screwed him over while he was the head coach of the Browns in 1995. After joining Cleveland that offseason, McMahon was cut after training camp, but he said Belichick assured him that he’d be re-signed.

According to McMahon, Belichick told the QB that the Browns needed him and that he wanted him to move to Cleveland. At the time, McMahon had a family. That’s a pretty big ask. Makes it seem like there’s some sort of big commitment, right? Again, this is all from McMahon’s account.

That season, McMahon wasn’t signed until about midway through the year. He dressed for three games but never took the field. Then what happened? Oh man, we’re glad you asked. Completely unhinged.

The veteran QB threatened the Browns GM at the time (according to Pro Football Reference, Belichick was the de facto GM and Ozzie Newsome was the director of pro personnel, so maybe it was Newsome he went after?) after an exchange that suggested McMahon wasn’t going to be paid for his time in Cleveland. McMahon said he “needed his money” and the GM allegedly said “maybe we’ll pay you, maybe we won’t.”

That’s probably the part of the story that sounds the most true — the Browns being sleazy and incompetent. After pinning the GM up against a wall by his throat, McMahon came to his senses, asked for his release, headed to the quarterbacks room, and said this:

“‘Hey boys, I’ll see you all later. I’m outta here,” McMahon remembered. “The QBs coach said, ‘Have you talked Bill?’ I said, ‘You can tell Bill to kiss my a–. He’s a lying piece of s–t.’”

We’re just glad McMahon didn’t choke Belichick. That could’ve altered Patriots history.
