Despite their roster overhaul this offseason, the New England Patriots will have their work cut out for them to make the playoffs next season.

While their individual talent suggests they should be considered a lock to qualify for the tournament, the AFC is the definition of loaded, meaning a team that posts double-digit wins could end up on the outside looking in.

Nevertheless, the Patriots’ free agent spending spree did wonders in terms of elevating their ceiling.

In doing so, however, they made some standout performers extremely expendable when they would normally be relied on to carry the load at their respective positions.

What we’re trying to say is that New England’s newfound injection of talent could give them reason to part ways with certain players at the end of next season.

Whether it be veterans on expiring contracts or players who’ve struggled with injuries, there figure to be at least a handful of contributors whose time with the Patriots is drawing to a close. With that in mind, here are three who are seemingly entering their final year in Foxborough.

3. Devin McCourty

The McCourty twins popped up in the news cycle this week when Jason reportedly agreed to a one-year contract with the Miami Dolphins in free agency, ending a three-year run with the Patriots in which he played alongside his twin brother, Devin.

While it’s heartbreaking to see their partnership end, Devin could be faced with a similar situation this time next offseason. After all, the Patriots showed zero incentive to retain Jason after his contract expired, and it would be surprising if they didn’t do the same with Devin next year.

Not only is McCourty entering the final year of his contract with New England, but he’s also entering his age-34 season. Knowing how reluctant the Patriots are when it comes to extending players who are in the twilight of their respective careers, we can’t help but think McCourty is nearing the end of the road in Foxborough.

Patriots safety Devin McCourty is entering the final year of his contract.

Though the former first-rounder played over 90% of the defensive snaps last season, there’s no denying he lost a step in coverage. Assuming 2020 second-round pick Kyle Dugger takes another step in his development this upcoming campaign, expect the Patriots to move on from McCourty.

That would leave the Patriots with a hole in their secondary, but the void could be filled by offseason acquisition Jalen Mills, who can play both cornerback and safety. That, or, they could simply take to free agency to find a replacement or re-sign the underrated Adrian Phillips.

Either way, fans shouldn’t expect McCourty back in New England next year.
