Patriots: Devin McCourty’s reaction to brother leaving NE was excellent
By Jerry Trotta
With the New England Patriots’ secondary locked and loaded for next season following the offseason acquisition of Jalen Mills, they didn’t really have any incentive to re-sign veteran defensive back Jason McCourty, whose contract expired after the 2020 campaign.
In fact, there were legitimately zero rumors connecting McCourty with a Patriots reunion, seemingly giving him the freedom to sign anywhere he wanted.
Though the 33-year-old vet was heavily linked with the Giants throughout the offseason, he ultimately reached one-year deal with the Dolphins on Thursday, marking a reunion with former Patriots defensive assistant Brian Flores.
The deal also marked the end of the McCourty brothers’ reign in the Patriots’ secondary, which lasted an impressive three years.
While Devin’s loyalty clearly lies in Foxborough, he was still rightly gutted to find out he’ll no longer be playing alongside his twin brother.
In fact, McCourty took to social media after the news was first reported with an absolutely tremendous reaction that is guaranteed to leave Patriots fans laughing.
Devin McCourty had a priceless reaction to his brother leaving the Patriots.
It would appear McCourty searched long and hard in the family photo album to find that beautiful shot. And for those wondering why he felt obligated to sign the tweet, the twins actually share a Twitter account, which speaks volumes to how inseparable they are.
It might not sit well with fans in New England that McCourty willingly signed with a division rival, but can you really blame him for choosing the Dolphins? Not only is he reunited with a familiar face in Flores, who coached him with the Patriots in 2018, but he’ll likely receive a lot of playing time as the third cornerback on Miami’s depth chart behind Xavien Howard and Byron Jones.
Devin and Jason’s run with the Patriots was bound to end at some point, but that should take nothing away from how awesome it was for them to reunite on the same team for the first time since they were wreaking havoc in Rutgers’ secondary back in the late 2000s.
While Jason was the first McCourty brother to realize the organization’s wrath when it comes to letting aging players walk in free agency, Devin is entering the final year of his contract. In other words, he could use his brother’s experience as a presage to what potentially lies ahead.
Regardless, it’s encouraging to see that Devin is coping with the news by making some of their Twitter account’s 180,000 followers belt out in laughter.
