Inside look at Patriots draft room will have you worried about Mac Jones

Though Justin Fields dropped down within range of their selection, the New England Patriots were reportedly not terribly interested in him, and entertained several other options enthusiastically at No. 15.

Based on this behind-the-scenes video of their choice, they weren’t terribly keen on drafting Mac Jones, either.

The Alabama quarterback, projected to land anywhere from No. 3 to the back of the first round, fell into Bill Belichick’s lap and seems like a perfectly competent QB who will eventually take the reins from Cam Newton.

When the choice was made, it wasn’t all sunshine and roses in the war room — though, to be fair, is it ever sunshine and roses in Foxborough?

The Patriots attempted to hype up the selection by releasing the video of the (drumroll please) MOMENT Mac Jones joined the organization on Thursday night.

Unfortunately, it maybe had the opposite effect.

Have you ever seen this many people unsure of what they’re about to do on draft night?

Did the Patriots…really want to pick Mac Jones?

First, Bill Belichick gets up slowly with a stern look on his face. Then, he calls all the dudes to the side of the room and they shuffle around and huddle. “We’re all good with this?” Belichick mutters like they’re about to pull off a bank heist.

Everyone in the room checks in with everyone else to make sure they’re fine with what’s about to occur. Really, really fine. Super fine. Couldn’t be finer. The enthusiasm just drips off these faces.

Compare this with the room in Arizona when Zaven Collins was selected next, an emotional call met with fist pumps, tears, and F-bombs.

Typically, New England’s operation is more buttoned-up than most of the league’s other outfits, and it works for them.

You can’t help but get the feeling the Patriots hoped deep down that someone else would solve their QB conundrum for them by sprinting up for both Jones and Fields, allowing them to add an impact defender at 15 (or trade down!) before selecting Davis Mills or Kyle Trask.

Jones might be a perfect fit in New England. But until his first NFL TD, we’re going to think of him as the guy Belichick and the entire draft room had to sternly check in with each other about before holding their noses together and passing in the card.
