Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. RB. Memphis. Kenneth Gainwell. 1. player. 858

The Patriots don’t need a running back in any sort of dire or dramatic sense, but they could potentially form a thunder-and-lightning duo next to Harris. Even though Gainwell sat last season out, he remains one of the top running backs in this class due to his game-breaking speed.

Memphis featured Gainwell extensively as a runner and pass-catcher, and that skill should make him a very valued commodity with the Patriots. On an offense that lacked athletic ability before adding Smith, Gainwell could use his soft hands, great vision, and solid long speed to make himself a contributor right out of the gate.

How would Kenneth Gainwell help the Patriots?

Gainwell and Harris could split carries next season, as Gainwell has slightly more explosion and athletic prowess woven into his game than a one-cut runner like Harris. In an offense that will be run-heavy given the presence of Newton, having two competent backs is much better than just one.

Harris has done plenty to show he can be a featured back at the next level, but Gainwell might have just a bit higher of an athletic ceiling, which could prompt the selection.

If Belichick is insistent on developing another 1,000-yard rusher, Gainwell might be the best bet on Day 2 of the draft given his production.
