Patriots’ Trent Brown missing Tuesday media session doesn’t seem great

The New England Patriots faced burning questions about their offensive line entering the offseason, so they deserve massive credit for answering the call.

Not only were stalwarts Joe Thuney and David Andrews slated for free agency, but there was speculation about Isaiah Wynn’s future and whether veteran starter Marcus Cannon, who opted out of last season, would retain his starting role.

When the dust settled, however, the Patriots re-signed Andrews, let Thuney test free agency (he ultimately signed with the Chiefs), kept Wynn, and traded for journeyman Trent Brown to presumably be Cannon’s like-for-like replacement at right tackle after he was dealt to Houston.

Speaking of the trade for Brown, it falls right under the category of risky moves that come with significant upside, which have been prevalent for the Patriots thus far.

There have always been questions about Brown’s overall work ethic and motivation, but his reaction on social media following the deal was enough to nip those concerns in the bud in the short term.

Unfortunately for Brown and the Patriots, however, that didn’t last very long. Per reports, the former seventh-round pick didn’t show for his Tuesday media session. Based on the initial reactions, it seems like he failed to notify someone that he wouldn’t be available.

It would be wrong to jump to conclusions here, as there’s no way to know why Brown was absent for his presser. After all, the 2019 Pro Bowler could be dealing with a family matter that was so urgent that he simply didn’t have time to contact anyone.

Perhaps the most alarming part of Brown’s surprising nonattendance is the fact that the team was left without an update regarding his status almost two hours after his media session was supposed to get underway, as Mark Daniels of the Providence Journals disclosed on Twitter.

We’ll provide an update on Brown’s absence as soon as the Patriots’ public relations team learns of his whereabouts. In the meantime, however, let’s keep our fingers crossed that this was an honest mistake from the 27-year-old more than it is a matter of irresponsibility or an emergency.

Assuming it has nothing to do with the latter, you have to think the Patriots and Bill Belichick will handle any potential discipline internally. Who knows, maybe Brown will have all the answers when (or if) he eventually steps in front of the microphone.
