That report earlier in the offseason suggesting the New England Patriots would be “uncharacteristically” aggressive once free agency opened sure was true.

Bill Belichick was even active before that, making a couple of trades to beef up the offensive line and clear even more cap space.

Then he fully struck on Monday, lapping the rest of the NFL.

The Patriots are clearly getting ready for a redemption tour of sorts after missing the playoffs for the first time in over a decade and finishing with a losing record for the first time in over two decades.

At this point, we can bet they’re not done yet, either. But let’s run through what we know so far.

Here’s a complete breakdown of the Patriots’ free agent signing and trades so far this offseason.

That’s a simplified version, but there’s more. Here’s the full breakdown in chronological order:

  • Patriots acquire OT Trent Brown and seventh-round pick from Raiders for fifth-round pick
  • Patriots sign QB Cam Newton to a one-year contract worth up to $14 million
  • Patriots sign CB Justin Bethel to three-year, $6 million contract
  • Patriots trade OT Marcus Cannon to Texans for three pick swaps (4th, 5th and 6th rounds)
  • Patriots sign TE Jonnu Smith to four-year, $50 million contract
  • Patriots sign NT Davon Godchaux to two-year, $16 million contract
  • Patriots sign EDGE Matt Judon to four-year, $56 million contract
  • Patriots sign DB Jalen Mills to four-year, $24 million contract
  • Patriots sign DE Deatrich Wise (details not yet disclosed)
  • Patirots re-sign DL Carl Davis (details not yet disclosed)
  • Patriots sign WR Nelson Agholor to two-year, $26 million contract
  • Patriots sign WR Kendrick Bourne to three-year, $22.5 million contract
  • Patriots sign DT Henry Anderson to two-year contract ($ not yet disclosed)
  • Patriots sign TE Hunter Henry to three-year, $37.5 million contract
  • Patriots sign C Ted Karras to one-year, $4 million contract
  • Patriots sign S Cody Davis to two-year contract
  • Patriots sign LB Kyle Van Noy to two-year contract
  • Patriots sign DL Montravius Adams to one-year contract
  • Patriots sign C David Andrews to four-year contract
  • Patriots sign K Nick Folk to one-year contract

Woah! That’s all in a week! And mostly over the last 24 hours!

But we do have one bummer, Pats Nation. The franchise lost stalwart offensive lineman Joe Thuney on Monday after he signed a blockbuster contract with the Kansas City Chiefs. His run in New England is over, but it’s not surprising. Though the Patriots did tease us when a report dropped on Monday suggested they re-opened negotiations with the man who hasn’t missed a game in his five NFL seasons.

Unfortunately, the Patriots were never going to use most of their cap space to retain Thuney, especially after they traded for Brown and watched Michael Onwenu emerge in 2020. There were simply too many roster holes to sink that much money into one position — which was actually somewhat a position of strength for New England.

Defensive tackle Adam Butler also departed for the Dolphins on a two-year contract, which was to be expected after the other additions Belichick made on the D-line.
