NFL Draft 2021: Bears get a downfield threat

Rashod Bateman’s NFL pedigree would’ve been more assured if the 2020 season had simply never happened.

All things considered, though, it appears he’ll land right below the very top tier of Alabama wideouts regardless, where he probably belongs.

Bateman’s 2019 season was a revelation, featuring 1,219 receiving yards and 11 TDs, but his 2020 was left checkered by the pandemic. He opted out in early August, then rejoined the season when it became clear the Big Ten was moving forward, against all odds.

Without this scattershot year in his bag, you’d be hearing a lot more about Bateman. But it shouldn’t matter.

Poised to lose Xavier Rhodes and TJ Carrie, and without full faith in Rock-Ya Sin, the Colts will be quite pleased if Jaycee Horn falls all the way down to them at their initial draft spot.

Right now, Indianapolis is likely torn between a pair of true outcomes. Should they attend to Anthony Castonzo’s retirement immediately, and draft his replacement in the first round? Or should they enforce the cornerback position, which was further weakened this offseason by a number of likely departures?

If someone like Darrisaw reaches 21, the calculus changes. But we’ll go Horn, as many have also mocked.
