6 best New England Patriots that only spent one year in town
By Mike Luciano
No. 5: RB Jonas Gray
Talk about a flash in the pan. Gray’s fourth career game made him look like the reincarnation of Sam Cunningham, running for 201 yards and four touchdowns against the Indianapolis Colts in 2014. The win helped the former Notre Dame runner grace the cover of Sports Illustrated, making him an overnight star.
Gray ran for 201 yards on 37 carries, scoring four times after coming into the game without one touchdown. However, his 15 minutes of fame was more like 15 seconds, as Gray was benched for the next game due to a violation of team rules. He ran for just 91 yards in the remainder of the season.
Gray fell off the face of the Earth after that one year with the Patriots
Gray didn’t even make the roster in 2015, as he was inactive for four of the nine games after his Colts outburst. He tried to latch on with the Miami Dolphins and Jacksonville Jaguars, but nothing materialized.
Gray serves as a bit of a cautionary tale for anyone on the Patriots. Even breaking out for 200 yards and four touchdowns does not exclude you from the wrath or Belichick. Gray might not have had a long career, but he’ll always be able to look back fondly on that one night he turned into Walter Payton against the Colts.
