3 cap casualties Patriots absolutely need to avoid this offseason
2. Adam Humphries
Remember when everyone thought Adam Humphries was the perfect fit for the Patriots when he hit free agency after the 2018 season? Well, he had his chance.
New England reportedly offered him a contract, but he turned it down to sign with the Tennessee Titans. While we’ll admit it wasn’t a bad choice given the Titans’ rise over the last few years, that doesn’t mean he’s a good fit for the Pats now.
The rhetoric surrounding this pairing was calling for Belichick to give Tom Brady another weapon in the passing game — that sneaky option who could slide underneath the defense, haul in a quick-hitter, and elude some defenders for big chunks of yards. Think Wes Welker.
Adam Humphries simply is no longer a fit with the Patriots.
But those times are gone. Brady is in Tampa, the Pats don’t have a quarterback at the moment, and the wide receiving corps needs a lot more than Humphries, who is a complementary piece at best. And why would the Patriots want him now? In a high-powered Titans offense, he couldn’t even carve out a significant role for himself.
Across 19 games, he caught just 60 passes for 602 yards and four touchdowns with Ryan Tannehill, one of the most effective passers in the league over that span, as his quarterback.
No thanks! We’ll need a more effective slot option to pair with one of our big free agency acquisitions.
