Patriots: Could previous potential conflicts keep Josh McDaniels from Eagles job?

The New England Patriots still don’t know the status of offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, who is reportedly a frontrunner for the Philadelphia Eagles head coaching job.

Should McDaniels leave, we doubt fans would be devastated, but Bill Belichick being tasked with finding a new offensive coordinator isn’t exactly another assignment we want to add to the offseason docket. What’s funny is that nobody expected this since McDaniels endured arguably his worst year ever as the Patriots’ OC.

Another aspect of all this that’s funny? McDaniels has somehow made it this far in the interview process despite an unsavory report from 2013 surfacing about McDaniels’ and Belichick’s opinion about current Eagles general manager Howie Roseman, who has occupied that post since 2010. Could this maybe keep McDaniels from getting the job?

Here’s what the old report said, via David Jones of PennLive.com:

"“A potential sticking point for O’Brien regarding the Eagles job could be their new general manager Howie Roseman. The club’s 37-year-old salary cap guru is known to be held in low regard by O’Brien’s mentor, Patriots coach Bill Belichick, and by another strong O’Brien contact, former Broncos head coach and Patriots assistant Josh McDaniels.”"

Props to WEEI’s Ryan Hannable for digging that baby back up this week. Wouldn’t it be hilarious if Roseman dragged McDaniels throughout this entire process only to pass on him at the last possible moment? The Indianapolis Colts would sure love to see that after what McDaniels did to them a few years back!

And what about that? Think the Eagles might be a little bit concerned about the last time McDaniels went through the head coaching carousel … especially since it caused Philly to lose Frank Reich, who was the mind behind their offense and Carson Wentz’s development?

Maybe, maybe not. But worthwhile thoughts to consider. Perhaps Patriots fans are hoping McDaniels leaves because the offense likely needs a fresh start with a lot of new personnel likely coming to Foxborough.

In all honesty, it’d just be great if we knew the Eagles’ answer as soon as possible.
