2. Matthew Stafford

If the Patriots can’t find a young option, Matthew Stafford would be a great fit.

Poor Matthew Stafford. Somebody needs to save this guy from the dumpster fire that is the Detroit Lions organization. Although it’s far from his fault, 2021 seems like the year the Lions may finally move on from the veteran QB.

Stafford is one of the most disrespected quarterbacks in the league. The Lions’ losing records the past several seasons are no result of his effort every week on the gridiron.

The former No. 1 overall pick possesses insane arm strength and can place a ball anywhere with pinpoint accuracy. He’s a great pocket passer and uses his football IQ to read the opponent’s defense, for which he is one of the best in the NFL.

Stafford’s toughness is unparalleled and he’s proven that he has to be unable to move in order to miss a game. The fact he puts his body on the line for a team like the Lions is nod to his character. This is a guy who would exemplify the Patriot Way.

The contract is a bit rich at around $30 million a year for the next couple of season, but the Patriots hold a fair chunk of cap space. And if the Lions are willing to eat some of Stafford’s salary in a trade, look for Bill Belichick to be very interested in the veteran, who can help groom the Pats’ next QB of the future.
