Patriots would be insane to hire Adam Gase to do anything

The Patriots are too smart and obsessed with winning to hire Adam Gase, right?

The New England Patriots have a slew of issues to address this offseason, but we wouldn’t point to the coaching staff as one of them. Almost every year, they lose one or two touted assistants to a promotion with another organization or the college ranks, but they normally navigate those departures without a hitch, and the same should be expected after this season.

Or should it?

You know how quarterbacks coach Jedd Fisch was announced as the new head coach at the University of Arizona this week? Well, a pair of NFL insiders theorized the possibility of the Pats turning to heavily-scorned Jets head coach Adam Gase as his replacement.

Hiring Gase in any capacity would truly be the perfect capper to 2020, when everything we thought we knew about the world has been flipped upside down, but we will honestly question our affinity for the Patriots if they bring him in.

It’s easy to see why the Patriots are being tabbed as a potential landing spot for Gase. Not only was he an assistant with offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels at Michigan State in 1999, but he proceeded to get hired by McDaniels as his wide receivers coach after he took the Broncos head coaching job in 2009.

Furthermore, Bill Belichick has bizarrely been very complimentary of Gase throughout his polarizing coaching career. He even reached out to him when he was fired by the Dolphins a few years back and continued heaping praise on him ahead of their teams’ showdown this weekend.

"“I think Adam’s done a great job this year of continuing to improve the team with coaching,” Belichick told reporters . “As usual, his excellent game plan and play-calling are problems for the defense. This is a team that’s gotten better.”"

We totally get that the Patriots are looking to add or promote new faces to their punctilious coaching staff, but we are all set on the Gase rumors. He garners acclaim in league circles as an offensive guru, but the Jets currently rank dead last in total yards (275.3) and points per game (15.3). That comes after they finished last and 31st in those respective categories last season.

Not to mention he has a combined 9-23 record in his first two years at the helm and would’ve been fired months ago amid his winless start to the campaign had fans been allowed inside MetLife Stadium. Assuming the Jets confirm the inevitable next Monday and give him the axe, there shouldn’t be a team out there interested in hiring him, regardless of the role.

You think it’s a coincidence that the core players of his Dolphins teams burst onto the scene after he was canned? He’s kryptonite when it comes to player development, and if the Patriots are serious about turning things around, they wouldn’t think twice about bringing him aboard.
