Bill Belichick’s sobering response to Dolphins loss sums up Patriots season

Bill Belichick didn’t mince words after the Patriots’ loss.

The New England Patriots have missed the playoffs for the first time since Tom Brady’s season-ending leg injury in 2008 and could potentially finish the 2020 season with a losing record if they drop one of their next two games — which would be the first time that’s happened since 2000.

So you can bet things were somber after the team’s 22-12 loss to the Miami Dolphins sealed their postseason fate. The offense was bad (per usual). The defense surrendered 250 yards on the ground. Stephon Gilmore left the game with a non-contact injury in the second quarter.

Nothing went well and Bill Belichick drove that point home when speaking to the media after the loss. We know the man rarely minces words, but when his own team is the subject of his bluntness, it really hurts.

On the day Belichick was eliminated from the postseason for the first time in 12 years, he says the Patriots didn’t deserve to win. That’s a killer. Not only that, but he said the coaching was a big reason why, shouldering the blame for the team’s shortcomings in so many areas.

The Patriots had the deck stacked against them heading into 2020 and yet Belichick still isn’t making any excuses.

However, in his defense, the fact that the offense or defense seemingly haven’t really figured anything out through 15 weeks is concerning.

The Patriots have known what they had to work with for a while now, but can’t really put it together. They have some solid wins on their resume, but at the end of the day, a 6-8 record, an offense that can’t really move the ball, and a defense that lacks an identity is really as bad as it gets.

Patriots fans (and Belichick) would surely love to forget about 2020 as soon as possible.
