Patriots: Joe Judge’s story of job interview with Bill Belichick is hilarious
By Adam Weinrib
Former Patriots assistant Joe Judge got put through the ringer by Bill Belichick during his job interview, because of course he did.
Bill Belichick only selects the finest men to help him Do His Job, doubtlessly choosing from an endless pile of applicants to fill every role within the Patriots organization.
And if you’re going to earn a position with the team, you’d better be prepared for everything. Imagine facing the Belichick we see eviscerate the media week in and week out, except it’s your livelihood on the line? Downright terrifying.
Current Giants head coach and former Belichick special teams disciple Joe Judge described his job interviews with both the Patriots’ head man and Alabama legend Nick Saban this week, and by the looks of it, both men were dedicated (knowingly or not) to making their applicant’s life as uncomfortable as possible.
Add this tale to a long list of classic Belichick stories that instantly make perfect sense.
Already with ample experience under his belt dealing with Nick Saban’s insanity (Judge described being heckled by Saban and another mysterious man during his interview as if he were on The Muppet Show, getting repeatedly needled by Statler and Waldorf), surely he was ready for Belichick’s best curveball.
Yes, even though his interview was the first time he’d ever spoken to the coach.
As Judge recalls, Belichick interrupted the interview to go shirtless and spontaneously change into a suit. What was it? Another tactic meant to throw the young coach off his game? Eh, not really; Belichick simply had somewhere to go, and didn’t care what else he was doing at the time.
Exquisite stuff.
Judge got both jobs he described as having nightmarish interviews, so one can only assume the man knows his football — and his bosses. Though his Giants are currently 0-4, Judge has remained laser-focused on the team’s gains, very much evoking the men he learned the game from.
So the next time your supposed boss strips to his skivvies in the middle of your interview, it might be a motivational tactic. It also might be a sign he simply can’t be bothered with how much he bothers you.
Or, you know, it might be a sign you should leave.
In Judge’s case, apparently, it was all part of the program.
