Julian Edelman’s latest Instagram post feels like a shot at Tom Brady
By Jerry Trotta
Patriots WR Julian Edelman’s latest post on Instagram left a lot for interpretation…
It feels weird to say, but the New England Patriots are getting by just fine without Tom Brady.
Following a slew of other departures and player opt outs, wide receiver Julian Edelman is one of a handful of Patriots veterans remaining from the famed Brady-Bill Belichick era. That didn’t initially sit well with the 34-year-old stud, who seemed to feel betrayed by his former teammate for keeping his big-money move to Tampa Bay a secret.
Edelman’s feelings were wholly understandable as he was tirelessly campaigning for Brady to stay in New England before March came along. His commendable efforts, of course, were for naught, but in an intriguing turn of events, he’s currently enjoying massive success with the new-look Patriots.
Well, in light of their crushing loss to Seattle on Sunday night, Edelman posted a photo on Instagram of the team getting ready to storm the field (presumably) before the game. The picture itself is awesome, but it wasn’t the main takeaway. Read the veteran wideout’s caption and try not to tell us it feels like a shot at Brady.
We hate to be the fans that overreact to a cryptic social media caption, but we can’t be the only ones who think that quote references Brady spurning Edelman and New England for the Buccaneers … right? The Patriots lost a plethora of 2019 starters to free agency this past offseason, but he was closer with TB12 than all of them, and by a wide margin.
Edelman is arguably off to the best start of his career and he might just be looking to rub it in Brady’s face. In his first two games with Cam Newton under center, the former seventh-round pick has 13 receptions for 236 yards, the latter of which ranks second in the entire NFL.
That includes a career-best performance versus the Seahawks in Week 2, when he tallied eight catches (on 11 targets) for 179 yards.
You could argue that Edelman would keep grinding and leading in silence if he and the Patriots weren’t playing as well as they are without Brady. However, when you couple their performance with Brady struggling to gain his footing in Tampa, chances are you’ll come to the conclusion that Edelman might have been taking a subliminal dig at the six-time champion with his Instagram post.
