Patriots: 3 players Pats should consider signing after surprising releases
By Jerry Trotta
1. Todd Davis
We were completely stunned when it was reported that Denver released linebacker Todd Davis ahead of the deadline. The move clearly came down to finances, as the Broncos will salvage $4.5 million in the process. However, that doesn’t make it any less puzzling as they, according to Spotrac, currently have the fifth-most salary cap space in the NFL at $28.924 million.
Davis was fresh off the best year of his career in 2019, logging 134 tackles, six of which came for a loss. He even showcased tremendous consistency in coverage, conceding 55 receptions on 71 targets, according to Pro Football Focus.
The Patriots have a depleted linebacking corps following the departures of Jamie Collins and Kyle Van Noy — plus Dont’a Hightower’s decision to opt out — and they could do a lot worse than signing a 28-year-old in the prime of his career who has a nose for the ball that you simply can’t teach.
Make it happen, Belichick!
