Patriots QB Brian Hoyer spoke to WEEI before the team’s first padded practice at training camp.

On Monday, New England Patriots beat reporters were buzzing. It was the first padded practice at training camp which means everyone got to see the quarterbacks in action. Cam Newton, Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer all got an equal amount of reps, with Stidham impressing the most. Looks like we have a battle!

Or do we?

Before Monday’s practice, Hoyer appeared on The Greg Hill Show and talked about the quarterback competition as well as the Patriots’ decision to bring Newton, a former MVP, into the fold.

"“Look, I think Coach (Bill) Belichick says every position is a competition no matter what it is every year,” Hoyer said on The Greg Hill Show. “So I think for me, I know going in that I am always going to compete like I am trying to be the starting quarterback. I did that when Tom was here. I know that was never going to happen because of who he was, but that pushed me to be better.“Adding another great quarterback like Cam to the room, it only makes us that much more competitive and that is going to bring out the best in all of us.”"

We’re not going to say that his comments hint at what’s to come, but do we really think the Patriots signed a former MVP who is “going to bring out the best” in everyone for him to … not start? Just sayin’! Hoyer’s been around the block and knows how things go in the QB room, so it’s not crazy to view this as a sign of what’s to come.

Cam’s bringing the dance moves to training camp in Bill Belichick’s kingdom. If he’s feeling this comfortable already, it might be easier to just name him QB1 now to avoid more media speculation.
