Don’t look now, but the Green Bay Packers might not be able to afford an extension for defensive tackle Kenny Clark, who will pocket $7.69 million in 2020 after the fifth-year option on his rookie contract was exercised.

Since becoming a full-time starter three seasons ago, the former No. 27 overall pick has compiled 172 tackles (23 for loss), 16.5 sacks, 22 quarterback hits and four forced fumbles.

Those numbers don’t even encapsulate Clark’s total value, as Pro Football Focus gave him an exemplary 78.9 grade for the 2019 season.

In sum, the UCLA product is deserving of a monster pay day, and the Patriots should absolutely have him on their radar in the event that Green Bay botches extension negotiations. Truth be told, if the NFL ends up losing billions in revenue due to COVID-19 — coupled with the Packers’ hideous cap situation — it might not even get that far.

The door will be open for New England to pounce on Clark, and the franchise better not pass on the opportunity to do so.
