Patriots: McCourty brothers commend Julian Edelman for his response to DeSean Jackson
Patriots defensive backs Devin and Jason McCourty praised Julian Edelman on their podcast.
Julian Edelman took his time, but the New England Patriots wide receiver responded to DeSean Jackson in a productive, progressive and brave manner after the Philadelphia Eagles veteran posted an anti-Semitic quote attributed to Adolf Hitler on Instagram. Just about everyone knows the full story by now.
Patriots defensive backs Devin and Jason McCourty addressed the situation on their podcast, “Double Coverage”, last week and had nothing but good things to say about Edelman for the way he addressed the issue. The twin brothers also said they disagreed with Jackson’s post and they were disappointed with his actions.
“I thought it was awesome watching my teammate … I got a chance to talk to him … Julian Edelman … understanding no matter what the situation is, hate is not something we want in our country … and he really struck up a great deal with DeSean Jackson, giving each other a chance to educate themselves.”
Can’t disagree with that. Edelman’s response was well thought out, calculated and lengthy, in which he touched upon a number of aspects in the wake of Jackson’s post. Edelman showed sympathy for Jackson’s mistake and misunderstanding, which is really all you can ask for during times like these.
The struggles the black community are going through (and have gone through) are well documented, so there’s no sense in adding further tension to what society is struggling with as a whole. The McCourty brothers were happy with Edelman’s approach and also condemned Jackson’s actions, though they were forgiving of his grave mistake.
The goal in all of this is to move the conversation forward by educating, understanding and sympathizing. Jackson needed to know what he did was wrong, but to ostracize and endlessly criticize him wouldn’t have solved the bigger problem.
Now, everyone is hoping to see positive results from something that was very unsettling a few weeks ago.
