New England Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore reacts to Cam Newton signing.

It goes without saying that all NFL fans are chomping at the bit to witness Cam Newton’s debut with the New England Patriots. The hype seemingly gains more steam with each passing week as he continues to post intimidating workout clips on social media and his new teammates respond to the signing.

We can now add cornerback Stephon Gilmore to that growing list.

During an appearance on The Bakari Sellers Podcast, which is owned by The Ringer, Gilmore provided his raw reaction to the news, and his comments should fire up fans in Foxborough.

“It was a great signing,” said Gilmore. “I think Cam’s very hungry. I’ve always been a Cam fan. I think he’s hard to prepare against, and he has a great opportunity to compete for a starting job, and I’m looking forward to seeing him on our team.”

If Patriots diehards found themselves drooling while reading that quote, well, wait until they get a load of the reigning Defensive Player of the Year describing how no quarterbacks compare to Newton’s combination of size and skills.

“I don’t think there are quarterbacks as big as him or as strong,” Gilmore continued. “I think he’s his own unique player. Obviously, he can run the ball. He can throw it. Anytime you can do both of those things, it’s hard to get ready for a certain thing, so he always keeps you off guard.”

The hype was already through the roof, but Gilmore managed to increase it tenfold with his reaction. Is it even possible to call Newton’s comeback an underdog story anymore? We get that the former MVP played just two games in 2019, was shown the door by the Carolina Panthers, and went months without finding a home in free agency.

However, the ongoing praise means that his ceiling with New England this upcoming season will only continue to increase. In our eyes, that’s great news for the Patriots because all signs indicate that Newton will thrive off that pressure.
