The New England Patriots and owner Robert Kraft would benefit greatly by signing Colin Kaepernick.

At this point, the Colin Kaepernick situation is well beyond the game of football, and if you don’t understand that, well, then just spend 60 more seconds on this page without reading another word before closing the window.

The New England Patriots have never been in a better situation to stick it to the NFL and help turn the page on Boston’s troubling modern day run-ins with racism — we’ve heard a lot about that from MLB players such as Adam Jones, CC Sabathia, Torii Hunter, and even Red Sox outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr.

So why don’t Robert Kraft and Bill Belichick do the right thing and sign Kaepernick?

This team signed Antonio Brown last year after the circus he created in the offseason. Do Patriots fans really think Kaepernick’s mere presence in training camp will create a distraction? Are we forgetting Belichick is running the show? This organization, regardless of the circumstance, is very rarely stuck in the media crossfire.

Remember Julian Edelman got drunk and walked on someone’s car? That was news for like a day. How about when Tom Brady fumbled over his words in the Deflategate press conference? We’re not saying controversy doesn’t follow the Pats — we’re just saying they’re really good at deflecting or burying it.

For all of the good Kraft has done, signing Kaepernick would be the icing on the cake regarding his (newfound) benevolent reputation. He helped get Meek Mill out of jail; he started the REFORM Alliance with Jay-Z to help with criminal justice reform; he donated $1 million to help fight systemic racism, among other things.

He’s not perfect, but he’s helping promote change, so signing Kaepernick will help further solidify his dedication to change the status quo. The Patriots also need a quarterback, or at least a semblance of some competition heading into camp. You’re not going to convince anyone that Jarrett Stidham vs Brian Hoyer is real, because it’s not.

Kaepernick in New England would change everything. It’d be the biggest story of the NFL season by far. It’d help mend a bridge the owners and Roger Goodell opted to burn back in 2016, only to scramble and completely shift their stance mere weeks ago in wake of George Floyd’s death and the response from the players.

But more importantly, the New England Patriots would be sending a message to the world in regards to racism in the United States and that they do not stand for it. Kaepernick was very obviously blackballed by the NFL. Bringing him to a place that seems like he’d be immediately rejected is the exact move that needs to be made.

Next. Michel's fifth-year option anything but guaranteed right now. dark

Tell the fans this is the new reality. You think that many people will stop watching football altogether if he rejoins the NFL? Ok. For every fan lost there, one could argue more would be gained because of the positive response from younger generations. Give the man a chance in a legitimate quarterback battle and let the world watch.

After all, a Twitter poll of nearly 14,000 Patriots fans found 52.3% would support the move. Let’s make it happen and change the world, Bob!
