Disconnect apparently there between Phillip Dorsett and Patriots

Wide receiver Phillip Dorsett said staying with the New England Patriots in 2019 was a mistake he did not want to make again in 2020.

Former New England Patriots wide receiver Phillip Dorsett truly regrets re-signing with the team in 2019 apparently.

After earning his first Super Bowl championship in 2018 — one season after being traded — Dorsett re-signed with the Patriots in 2019 in hopes of creating a larger role for himself … but would later regret his choice to stay in New England.

According to Dorsett — who signed a one-year contract worth $1.05 million with the Seattle Seahawks during free agency this offseason — he believes that he could have and should have signed with the Seahawks in 2019 rather than electing to remain in New England for a third season, per The News Tribune’s Gregg Bell.

"“I could have come (to Seattle) last year, but I chose to stay in New England. I didn’t want to make that mistake again (in 2020).”"

Despite not having as many yards as he did in 2016 while still a member of the Colts, Dorsett arguably had the best seasons of his NFL career while playing on the Patriots with Tom Brady and Josh McDaniels — one of the best quarterback/coordinator duos in the history of the league.

In his first two seasons with the Patriots, Dorsett impressively caught 73% of his targets (44/60) for 484 yards and three touchdowns in two seasons, despite being used primarily as a backup/reserve receiver option.

But throughout his last three years in New England, Dorsett has logged 73 receptions for 881 yards and eight touchdowns.

Dorsett will once again have a great opportunity to thrive and revive his career with quarterback Russell Wilson and the Seahawks. They excel at spreading the ball around the field and getting everyone involved. He will also be a great additional option for Wilson next to receivers Tyler Lockett, DK Metcalf, and newly-acquired veteran tight end Greg Olsen.

All in all, it’s still unknown where the disconnect happened between Dorsett and the New England Patriots.

Perhaps Dorsett was under the impression that he would have more of a role heading into his third year with the Pats — which ultimately did not happen. And then once Brady left, Dorsett’s decision later proved that he did not want to be part of a New England offense ran by an inexperienced quarterback in Jarrett Stidham.

He further elaborated on his line of thinking in an interview per NBC Sports’ Curtis Crabtree:

"“I’m not going to say it’s not any fun. Because at the end of the day, I went to two Super Bowls and won one. So you can’t say there’s no fun in that. There is fun in that. But at the end of the day when you’re at practice, it’s all business. When you’re in the meeting rooms, it’s all business. When you’re on the practice field or the game field, it’s all business. But I met some amazing people there. Amazing teammates, media, equipment managers, coaches. I had a great experience there. And I was just ready for the next step, you know, I’m blessed to be here. I can’t wait to get going. And I’m just thankful.”"

Next. Last three games could determine AFC East -- and Patriots' season. dark

It will be interesting to see whether Dorsett has an opportunity to revitalize his career in Seattle. While he’s never necessarily been bad or a true bonafide “bust,” he certainly has yet to play like a first-round pick in any of his NFL seasons to date.
