Defensive Line & Defensive End

The New England Patriots upgraded their defensive line this offseason by signing Beau Allen to a two-year contract this spring. Allen has plenty of experience and is your standard underrated Patriots free agent signing that adds necessary beef and muscle to the defensive line.

Throughout his career, Allen has reliably and durably played in 90 games during his six NFL seasons between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. His 6’3, 327-pound frame is going to be a solid addition to the middle of the D-line next to third-year nose tackle Adam Butler, who carries 300 lbs with him as well.

Lawrence Guy is going to be starting for his fourth year in a row since signing with the Patriots back in 2017. Guy has become a versatile defensive end and can line up with his hand up or down, and also switch into the outside linebacker role when called for. He sets the edge, owns his position, and is a huge part of the Pats defense this season.

Who will be playing parallel to Guy this season is open for discussion. There are a few players who are capable of rotating from defensive end and outside linebacker, and I think it’s going to come down to who can simply play the best. John Simon, Deatrich Wise, Derek Rivers, Chase Winovich, and rookie Anfernee Jennings are all going to be in the conversation this season.
