Philip Rivers

Just before the free agency season begins, Philip Rivers has up and moved his entire family from San Diego to Miami. Sounds easy for the typical family, but Rivers and his wife have nine children. Nothing about that move sounds easy to me.

The 38 year old veteran has spent his entire 16 year career with the San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers, has made the playoffs six times, and has one AFC Championship appearance along the way.

The move to Miami would indicate a potential destination for the veteran free agent quarterback. The Miami Dolphins are projected to have the most salary cap space with $117 million (per Spotrac). Moreover, the Chargers have already publicly indicated they plan to move on from Rivers in 2020.

It’s not odd for athletes to play in cities they don’t reside in full time, but given Rivers’ situation with his family, it doesn’t seem logical for him to play for the New England Patriots next season.

Although he would be a viable option for the Pats, he wouldn’t be around for more than a season or two at the most. The Patriots would be much better off going after another free agent quarterback.

Given his age and experience, the market value for Rivers is going to be around $27 million per year, which will be well over the Patriots’ budget.
