New England Patriots 4 Downs Preview: Week 11 @ Philadelphia Eagles
4th Down: Super Bowl 52 rematch
The winners of the last three Super Bowls will face off Sunday at 4:25 pm ET.
The New England Patriots are looking to get back to their winning ways against the team that defeated them two years ago in the Super Bowl. It was a shootout in that game from the opening drive, as both teams exchanged points back and forth and there was just one punt total from both teams. In the end, Philadelphia won the game 41-33 to win their first Super Bowl championship.
However, the New England Patriots are a different team than the team that lost the Super Bowl. Julian Edelman was still nursing a torn ACL in February of 2018 and didn’t play in that game. He’s been on fire for most of this current season after winning Super Bowl MVP honors last season against the Rams in Super Bowl 53.
The defense of the New England Patriots is certainly much better this season so far than it was in Super Bowl 52, too.
The secondary, led by Stephon Gilmore, the McCourty twins, Jonathan Jones, and JC Jackson, are collectively much better than the secondary that took the field in Minneapolis. Jamie Collins was not on the team back then, and he is having arguably his best season as a Patriot in 2019. Kyle Van Noy is coming into his own this season as well, and he’s a big reason why this defense is so dangerous (despite losing to the Ravens).
It was the poor play of the defense that primarily cost the Patriots that Super Bowl two seasons ago, but now it’s primarily the excellent play of this defense that has New England primed for a win in a revenge game today against the Eagles.
