The New England Patriots are getting their first-round draft pick back at just the right time.
Wide receiver N’Keal Harry has missed all seven games of the regular season up to this point because of a preseason ankle injury that landed him on injured reserve. Harry began practicing two weeks ago when he first eligible to do so, but that still wasn’t a sure sign that he’d be brought back into the Patriots’ plans this season.
According to a recent report though, Harry both made the trip to Baltimore with his teammates and was officially activated off of IR. Barring something unforeseen happening at the last minute, he should make his regular season debut for the Pats tonight against the Ravens.
His return should be a welcome sight for New England quarterback Tom Brady, who has had to keep the Patriots offense alive despite multiple injuries, setbacks, and roster transactions this season. Gone are Rob Gronkowski, Antonio Brown, Demaryius Thomas, and Josh Gordon, all thought to be major contributors at one point or another on this team in 2019.
In their stead is Harry, Julian Edelman, Phillip Dorsett, Jakobi Meyers, and Gunner Olszewski at receiver, with Benjamin Watson and Ryan Izzo at tight end. The Patriots are also hoping that Sony Michel will be spelled in the backfield by Rex Burkhead and James White tonight.
Of all these names, Edelman, Olszewski, Izzo, Burkhead, and White were all listed as questionable to play as of Friday’s final injury report. Tight end Matt LaCosse has already been downgraded to out with a knee injury.
The Patriots will hope to take advantage of a Ravens pass defense that is only ranked No. 26 in the NFL this season. Provided Brady has enough time to throw behind his makeshift offensive line, he should be able to dissect this secondary given the influx of new weapons he has at his disposal this week. Mohamed Sanu is one of those new targets, acquired before the trade deadline from Atlanta for a second-round pick.
Of course, the key to this game will be how well the New England defense plays against its toughest competition of the season so far. The Patriots have blitzkrieged their first eight opponents defensively en route to leading the NFL in most applicable categories for that side of the ball, but they also haven’t faced a quarterback quite like the Ravens’ Lamar Jackson.
Part of what makes Jackson so difficult to defend is his ability to scramble away from pressure and deliver chunks of yardage with his legs or with his arm, depending on what he sees on the other side of the line of scrimmage. Despite his youth (he’s only in his second year as a pro), Jackson has taken massive strides as both a passer and as a running quarterback.
Containing him will be the ultimate challenge for this Patriots D, which faces a murderer’s row of upcoming passers including Jackson, Carson Wentz, Dak Prescott, Deshaun Watson, and Patrick Mahomes. If New England can maintain its impressive degree of defensive dominance and playmaking against those next five quarterbacks and their respective teams, this Patriots defense will have earned the right to be considered among the greatest units in NFL history.
