Patriots offense is going to cost them a game

The New England Patriots defense might be historically dominant, but it will be the New England offense that will end up costing the Patriots in a game.

The New England Patriots are a perfect 8-0 through eight weeks and will have their shot to orchestrate another undefeated regular season. New England has achieved perfection thus far thanks to beating up on inferior opponents and a smothering historically great defense. But one has to wonder if the offense will be the reason the Patriots drop a game or two this season.

On this week’s episode of Stacking the Box, FanSided‘s Matt Verderame and Mark Carman, along with former NFL offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz, look at the Patriots offense and answer the question if offensive futility will be their undoing in a game this season (12:05).

“There’s going to come a game where they don’t win the turnover battle,” said Verderame. “That offense to me is a much bigger question. They are not playing well offensively. I get it, they’re the Pats. They’ll end up figuring out something, but I could see them losing a game 24-20 because of the offense, they can’t run the ball. They’re averaging 3.5 yards a carry.”

Look, if New England is going to be heading back to the Super Bowl, it will be because of its defense. It doesn’t matter who they’ve played, they’re just crushing the opposition on that side of the ball. However, even the best teams lose a regular-season game or two and the Patriots’ issues on offense could come back to haunt them at some point in November or December.

As long as the Patriots take care of the football and out-execute their opponent, they’ll be just fine and can win all the games they want. But there will come a game where seemingly everything goes wrong for the Patriots. It could be against the Baltimore Ravens this week on Sunday Night Football. Maybe it happens versus the Kansas City Chiefs or the Buffalo Bills down the road?

The point is New England is a good team with a great defense. This isn’t a great team yet, but there is a pathway for the Patriots to become that as the weather changes. Head coach Bill Belichick has said before the football season really starts after Thanksgiving. New England has been the most dominant December and January team in recent years. Look for that to continue.
