Who are the most underrated players on this Patriots roster?

5. Lawrence Guy

Lawrence Guy has been in the NFL for a long, long time… and yet even serious football fans and stat-heads probably don’t know who he is. Originally a seventh-round pick out of Arizona State University, Guy made pit stops with four other franchises before finding his way to New England in the spring of 2017.

Since then, he has become a brick wall in the middle of the Patriots defensive line. After starting all 16 games for the team in 2017 at defensive tackle, he again made it through a complete season for New England in 2018.

Over those first two years with the Pats, Guy compiled a total of 117 tackles, two sacks, and one forced fumble. During the previous six years he spent with four other teams, Guy had a total of 144 tackles, 6.5 sacks, and one forced fumble.

Moral of the story? Guy has blossomed as a football player now that he’s working under Bill Belichick’s tutelage in New England, just like so many other guys around him. Kyle Van Noy in Detroit, Jamie Collins in Cleveland, Jason McCourty in Tennessee… these guys were all good elsewhere, but they became great once they arrived in Foxborough.

Guy is no exception, and he’s again off to a fast start in 2019. Through six games, he already has 17 tackles. For a player who just barely missed the cut for Pro Football Focus’ top-10 defensive tackles last season (he was No. 11), there’s certainly still plenty of season left to further deepen the impact he’s made on this impressive New England defense.

Hopefully he starts getting noticed more beyond just Musket Fire, ProFootballFocus, and his appreciative fans up in New England.
