1st Down: Will a short week hurt New England?

The New England Patriots had only a few days to prepare themselves for the Giants as opposed to having extra days to get themselves prepped for a matchup with New York.

After the game, safety Devin McCourty talked in his press conference about preparing for the game on a short week. Here’s some of what he said, per the team’s official website:

"“When you get short weeks like this, it’s a lot of walkthroughs, it’s a lot of meeting time. Especially with this game, we weren’t 100 percent sure what they would do because all year they’ve had a lot of guys missing that were a big part of their offense.”"

Certainly the defense started off hot – as they have been doing all season along with the special teams – but the offense had yet another sluggish start to the game.

Could this be because of the short week? Well, seeing how for the previous two weeks have started the same way, it is more likely just a pattern that the offense is going through at the moment.

This game was indicative of a typical New England Patriots game for the last few weeks, with the team starting slow on offense but finishing strong while the defense plays consistent all game long to go with stellar special teams play. The short week could have been a factor, but this is how they’ve been playing lately so it doesn’t seem likely.
